Location: Earth’s Moon Colony, Terra-Port Docks

I’d only seen a ship this big the day I moved from Earth to the Moon Colony. Not quite as sleek as the Niña — yes, they named a few of the ships after the same ones that colonized America — the Freya clearly didn’t meet the regulations of a government transport vessel. Grungy, gray, and littered with startlingly intricate, brightly colored graffiti, it might’ve docked up more comfortably with a crime lord’s crew.

Other space craft filled the hanger around it. Those belonging to The Federation shone sleek and silver in the sterile light. Uniformed officers strapped with guns guarded these. I kept my back to them, skin prickling under their st...

Check out my fellow author K.E. Hubbard! She is an excellent writer, brilliant critique partner, and all around encouraging friend. In November, she will be publishing a satirical Christmas novella called The 24th. If you love Christmas movies, this sweet, short and humorous story is perfect for you!

 In her own words:

I’m so excited to announce that my novella, The 24th will be published on November first! If you love Christmas movies and all their trope-filled goodness, you’ll love this short, sweet, and funny story!

After their significant others find true love with someone else just days before Christmas, Jack and Ella decide to get revenge and crash Ella’s ex-boyfriend’s wedding. They travel together to the...

Location: Earth’s Moon Colony

Hijacking a Space Officer’s motorcycle is usually inadvisable, but when you’re on the run from a lunar gang it’s about the best form of transportation. I buzzed through the cold, sterile streets of Earth’s moon colony, gripping the handles of the officer’s motorcycle and trying not to slide off the back as I took hairpin turns in an attempt to outrun the Mahina gang.

Head down, I whipped through lanes of traffic — almost as bad as my hometown of Houston — and nearly clipped a bike messenger. The acrid smell of exhaust, so different from the gas I’d grown up with on earth, stung my nose. I yanked the soggy bandana around my neck up and over my nose. Stray curl...

Hey frands!

This week has already been crazy and it's only Tuesday. I moved all day today and let me tell you, moving brain is a thing. It's similar to my understanding of pregnancy brain. The "creative" spelling I've been doing this evening has been quite special.

It doesn't help that I'm also on allergy medicine because something is dying or blooming or whatever and my head is the size of Houston. Trying to write during this time has been an adventure. It would be easy to get frustrated with only being able to write a few paragraphs, but that doesn't seem helpful. Instead, at the moment I'm happy with each word I get on the page.

I feel this barrier disintegrating though.

There's something about the right space that free...

Hey frands! It's been a while. A lot has been going on — co-writing a series with an amazing friend, packing up for a move, and reevaluating goals — but I'm ready to get back into the groove.

Over the last week I got hit with the stomach plague! Womp, womp. This left me exhausted and highly unmotivated (nausea will do that to you), so I started watching the TV show Nailed It on Netflix. If you've never seen it, it's hilarious. Normal people attempt these SUPER difficult recipes (usually baked goods), and compete for $10,000.

I love the hosts, the beautiful (and horrendous looking) creations, and the lessons the bakers learn. It also reminds me a bit of the writing journey. The first draft most often looks...

Hello all and welcome to another I Want to Know Wednesday!

Last night, I finished an incredible book called Illuminae by Amie Kaufman. Because of the high intensity of the overall plot, I'd sworn to myself I would only read during the day. Adrenaline rushes are not conducive to sleep after all and as an eternal sufferer of insomnia, I don't need anything else to keep me awake. However, around 8 o'clock, the protagonists' dire situation dragged me straight back to its pages and a few hours later, I'd finished.

Needless to say, I was then forced to watch some cartoons and read some less intense words in order to calm down and get to sleep. Kaufman knows how to raise stakes. Without giving too much away, I was thoroughly con...

Hello all and welcome to another I Want to Know Wednesday! I had a brilliant idea for a blog post this morning on my way home from my workout. "That's it!" I thought. "That is the perfect beginning and the perfect topic. It will engage people well, read beautifully, launch me into a wonderful day!"(Okay, not really, but it was still good.)

I also thought of how to start an article for work I've been struggling with. The blank screen has been taunting me for days. Relief flooded me. "This," I thought, "is how you start your Wednesday."

Which means, of course, I promptly forgot both ideas.

I wasn't even in the car, so I had the ability to write them down. Did I do this? Nope. I most certainly did not. Womp, womp. So instead,...

Hello all and welcome to another I Want to Know! The beginning of this year has actually been pretty good, but I think caffeine withdrawal has thrown me a tad. I actually stopped drinking coffee the last Friday of December since I was cutting out a ton of other stuff starting January 1st. Still, my routine is now off and I'm trying to get back into the jive.

In an attempt to track down what exactly is triggering my digestive problems, this month I'm cutting caffeine, alcohol, grains, legumes, and dairy. *cue the tears* The first week started well (apart from a little food poisoning that wrecked me one night), but now the cravings are starting.

I didn't realize how much cutting all this out would effect me socially. But it...

Welcome to 2019! (Got that right on the first try and I'm very proud of myself.)

I've stared at this blinking cursor for way to long today. In spite of the new year, old fears hang on like the last dregs of sleep. What do I say that hasn't already been said? Will it sound cliche? Stupid? Is anybody reading?

We set goals because everyone loves a new page, a clean slate, but the second many of us stumble, we give up. Anxiety continues to swallow our words, one slice of cake turns into two, and instead of reading we sit through a full season of that show we know so well we can quote it (not guilty, I swear).

My good friend Sharon M. Peterson, is currently working on an amazing story about a young woman who creates a list of...

Hello, Wednesday Warriors!

With the holidays coming up, I have sweets on the brain! Or really, food in general. This is one of my most favorite times of the year. Not only because I get to see a lot of loved ones, but also the food. So. Much. Glorious. Food!

Wether it's sweet, spicy, crunchy, or soft there is something about themed meals that make them extra fun. Nostalgia draws us back, fills us with the warm glow of memories. I grew up making frosted Christmas cookies with my mom. Half the time I'd burry the snowmen, reindeer, angels, or Santas in glitter or sprinkles. They were never pretty, but they always tasted delicious and gave me a few hours of messy goodness with my mom and brother.

On the spicier side, my mom al...

In the novel I'm querying, one of the characters defines things in order to gain control over them. Being the word nerd that I am, I thought it would be fun to share a definition once a week in honor of Cal.

Thanks Kelsey Quick for the amazing artwork!

Hello, Wednesday Warriors!

Recently, I experienced a minor crisis. By minor, I mean a tiny little decision, that will truly have a minuscule impact on my future, consumed my mind for a good week and a half. It bothered me so much I even freaked out to a good friend via Facebook messenger. Thankfully, she talked me down and didn't judge me, at least not out loud. (Love you Megan!)

What silly choice threw me into an absurd tizzy? Hair.

It's amazing how hair can effect the way we feel. Color, texture, culture, horrible cuts from the past, and even Jr. High trauma (I'm not the only one, right?), all contribute to the way we feel about those strands — or lack there of — sprouting from our heads. They can either make us feel to...

Hello, Wednesday Warriors!

Sorry for the late post (I know you were all waiting with bated breath ;-)) but my bandwidth is low today. I'm not walking in the gray of depression or gasp of anxiety, I simply have very little in my tank. Work is very busy, I'm beta reading for someone, planning the spring semester for our church's youth group, and in the final sprint of Nano.

So I'm keeping it short and simple today: how do you replenish when your tank is empty?

If you have a second, I'd love to know!

Hello, Wednesday Warriors!

Welcome to the obligatory Thanksgiving post! This time of year, there is an influx of things people are thankful for. Some count their blessings one day at a time, others wait to reflect until the week — or even the day — of, while someone I know changed her twitter handle to different things she was thankful for (brilliant idea Sharon!)

Tonight, I'm heading out to my parents' house to spend a few days with them. We'll eat all of the traditional stuff — turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, pie, wine — and a few less traditional dishes — broccoli and cheese rice, queso (probably?), then play games. We will also celebrate with a few families from church, a tradition we started a few years ago.

This...
