I Want to Know Wednesday

January 23, 2019

Hello all and welcome to another I Want to Know Wednesday!

Last night, I finished an incredible book called Illuminae by Amie Kaufman. Because of the high intensity of the overall plot, I'd sworn to myself I would only read during the day. Adrenaline rushes are not conducive to sleep after all and as an eternal sufferer of insomnia, I don't need anything else to keep me awake. However, around 8 o'clock, the protagonists' dire situation dragged me straight back to its pages and a few hours later, I'd finished.

Needless to say, I was then forced to watch some cartoons and read some less intense words in order to calm down and get to sleep. Kaufman knows how to raise stakes. Without giving too much away, I was thoroughly convinced the protagonists could not win. Every time something went well, another event made things infinitely worse. At one point I even gasped out loud (there's a reason it's socially awkward for me to read in public).

This brings me to today's question. When was the last time a book kept you up way past your bed time? What was it that dragged you along? The romance? The insane stakes? Beautiful prose? All three?

If you have a second, I'd love to know!
